What’s the easiest job in the newsroom? We’re seriously entertaining the idea that — at least at the Wisconsin State Journal — it’s editorial page editor. Look at today’s editorial. It’s another “Filler,” praising the lack of mosquitoes this summer.
10 of the last 29 editorials have been Fillers. These things are supremely easy to write, hardly worth reading, and profoundly worthless in comparison to what can be found elsewhere.
Why publish them? With rare exception, the State Journal delivers only one editorial per day. Why waste it so often?
What occupies the remainder of the workday? Sleep? Video games? Watch ESPN?
