Almost all writing — even a grocery list — has some reason for writing it. Today, however, we could find no discernible reason for the State Journal’s editorial to have been written, at least not as an editorial.
The news of Kraft Foods and Oscar Meyer — cutting 1,600 jobs globally, only 12 in Madison — had been covered (more extensively) the day before as news. Today — now masquerading as an “editorial” — we have the same information, plus a value judgment, namely “hooray”.
Isn’t “hooray” obvious?
